Maternity/Adoptive Leave

GMS GPs with 100+ patients are entitled to locum contributions for 26 consecutive weeks maternity/adoptive leave, dependent on panel size (actual panel, not weighted):

  • For GPs with a panel of 500+ patients, the locum contribution is €394.48 per day (7 days per week = €2761.36 per week)

  • For GPs with a panel of 100-499 patients, the daily/weekly locum contribution is pro-rata to the previous month's capitation

    • Maternity leave is not available to those GPs with less than 100 patients.

Pro-rata capitation example:

If the GP's capitation payment was €3,400 last month and there were 31 days in that month, the daily contribution rate would be €109.68 (€3,400 ÷ 31 = €109.68). This is on top of normal capitation payment.

GPs continue to receive normal capitation, subsidies and any STCs claimed on the list.

At the end of maternity leave the GP shall on application to the CHO, be allowed up to 16 weeks unpaid leave.

If the list size moves over 500 then the higher rate will kick in during the leave, and if the list sizes moves under 500 then the lower rate will apply.

GPs in receipt of Rural Practice Allowance/Rural Practice Support Framework attract full maximum maternity leave entitlement applicable to a GP.
